Sunderland are showing interest in Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan, according to Sky Sports News, who has been on loan at League One outfit Blackpool.

Black Cats boss Jack Ross has made no secret of his desire to add to his squad during this month's transfer window as he looks to ready his side for a successful promotion campaign.

Heneghan, 25, has been a regular fixture in the heart of Blackpool's defence this season and clocked all 90 minutes in his side's 1-0 defeat against Sunderland on New Year's Day.

Ross appears to have been impressed by what he saw from the former Motherwell man and Sunderland are interested in his services.

The defender, who spent time in the youth ranks at both Everton and Stoke City, is due to spend the season on loan at Blackpool.

He kicked off his career at Chester before heading to Scotland, signing for Motherwell.

Heneghan played top flight football in Scotland before then signing a three-year contract at Sheffield United in the summer of 2017.
