Serie A strugglers Empoli are working on a deal to sign Newcastle United outcast Achraf Lazaar.

The full-back is firmly out of favour at St. James' Park and had been expected to leave Newcastle last summer, but no deal materialised.

He has experience of Italian football, having played for Palermo before joining Newcastle, while he had a loan stint at Benevento in the 2017/18 campaign.

Now Empoli are looking to take him back to Italy and, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, the club have already opened talks to do a deal.

However, Empoli are not alone in their admiration for Lazaar and Genoa are watching the situation regarding the full-back closely.

Newcastle handed Lazaar a five-year contract when they snapped him up from Palermo, but his spell at the club has disappointed.
