Sampdoria technical coach Angelo Palombo is coy over his side potentially re-signing Manolo Gabbiadini from Southampton, but admits he views the hitman as an excellent player.

Gabbiadini has struggled to earn regular playing time at Southampton so far this season and is the subject of interest from a host of clubs in this month's transfer window.

A return to Sampdoria could be a possibility, but Palombo is unsure over his side signing Gabbiadini this month and will not weigh in on the club's transfer policy.

Asked about Gabbiadini returning, the technical coach told Italian outlet Tutto Mercato: "An excellent player.

"I can speak on a technical basis because we played together.

"But the coach and the club will decide what to do in the market."

Gabbiadini made a total of 50 appearances for Sampdoria during his time at the club, finding the back of the net on 19 occasions.

The striker has clocked just 470 minutes of football for Southampton in the Premier League this season, scoring once.

His deal with the south coast club is due to run until the summer of 2021.
