The Colombian international has found himself in the firing line recently, with the striker’s attitude being the subject of criticism from boss Steven Gerrard.
Morelos was dropped from the Gers’ matchday squad to face Kilmarnock last weekend and continues to be lambasted for his lack of commitment.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a host of clubs, including Lille and Marseille, and may want to move on.
Ex-Gers man Naismith believes Morelos should have worked for his transfer from the beginning, but feels he will not go straight back into the team now, with the arrivals of Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe.
The Scottish international is also of the view that selling Morelos as soon as possible would be the best for everyone at the Glasgow-based club.
“For him, from the player’s point of view, that [working for his move] is what he should have done from the off“, Naismith said on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show.
“If the transfer happens, it happens but I think, as well with Rangers signing two other strikers, for me, he is not going to come straight back into the fold.
“He will just need to bide his time but the whole process of it, I think for everybody involved, him moving on sooner rather than later will help everybody.“
Morelos has scored two goals and provided two assists for Rangers this season but it remains to be seen if he will feature for the side again.
