Manchester United have a deal in place to sign the midfielder from Ajax for a transfer fee of €45m, including performance-based add-ons.

They have agreed to pay an up front fee of €40m and an agreement over a five-year contract has also been thrashed out between Manchester United and the player’s representatives.

The midfielder will undergo a medical soon after Ajax and Manchester United finalise the paperwork and will become the club’s first significant addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad this summer.

Barcelona were also chasing him, with Ronald Koeman keen on signing him, but Janssen believes Manchester United will turn out to be the better move as he will suit the Premier League giants more than the Blaugrana.

The former Ajax star said on Studio Voetbal: “Donny is a player who runs a lot.

“At Barcelona, they generally have midfielders who rely on the short passing game.

“I think this is the perfect move.”

Van de Beek will add to Manchester United’s midfield options for next season and the club believe at 23 he is at the perfect age to become part of Solskjaer’s rebuild.
