Newcastle signed the centre-back from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 and he has grown in stature during his two years at St. James’ Park.

He was getting a run of games in the starting eleven when he dislocated his shoulder and he is likely to be another month away from playing football.

Henchoz is happy with what he has seen of Schar at Newcastle and believes joining the club was a good decision as he needs to feel the pressure of a demanding fanbase.

The former Liverpool star believes Schar has improved defensively and looked more robust in the Premier League over the last two years.

Henchoz is confident that he will not find it hard to be in the starting eleven again for Newcastle once he returns from injury.

The former Switzerland defender told Swiss daily Blick: “He has surprised me positively.

“He made a good choice in Newcastle where the pressure with the fans is massive.

“He has always been good with the ball, but his defensive skills and physique have improved in the Premier League.

“It is a shame he got injured but when he is fit again, he will regain his regular place.

“I am convinced about that.”

Schar has played 55 times for Newcastle since joining the club from Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna.
