Newcastle had a bid accepted by Lille for the midfielder in the January transfer window, but the Frenchman refused to join the Magpies then.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has continued to remain on Newcastle’s radar and the club have been linked with wanting him in the current window.

The Magpies are not alone in their admiration of Soumare though as he has admirers in Serie A in the shape of Napoli.

However, according to Italian daily Corriere de Mezzogiorno, Lille have rejected an approach from Napoli for Soumare.

The Serie A giants want to sign a midfielder this summer and talks over signing Jordan Veretout from Roma have stalled.

Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli touched base with Lille and offered to sign Soumare on a loan deal with an option to buy.

But the Ligue 1 giants rejected the approach and it is unclear whether they will consider another move.

It also remains to be seen whether Newcastle make a fresh offer for Soumare before next month’s deadline.
