West Ham are looking to bring in a new centre-half before the transfer window closes next month and have failed in their attempts to land James Tarkowski from Burnley.

The Hammers are now considering other options and Southampton defender Vestergaard emerged as a loan option for David Moyes’ side on Thursday.

It was claimed that the London-based club are exploring the possibility of making a loan move for the 28-year-old.

However, doubt has been cast on whether West Ham have made an approach, while Southampton will not let Vestergaard go on loan.

Although Vestergaard is not Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first-choice centre-back, the Saints are not willing to entertain a loan move for the player in the ongoing transfer window.

West Ham will have to rush to land a new centre-back, with the transfer window coming to an end early next month.

The Irons are in the race with Leicester City for the signature of Wesley Fofana from Saint-Etienne and will be hoping to beat the Foxes to the defender’s capture.
