Smalling has been training away from the first-team squad since he returned from his loan spell at Roma as Manchester United try to work out his departure from the club.

The 30-year-old defender would prefer to move to the Serie A giants, but Roma have come nowhere close to paying the €20m Manchester United have been demanding for him.

Smalling is reportedly prepared to consider other offers and Inter are also interested, but with only ten days left in the transfer window, his future remains unresolved.

There is a real possibility that Smalling could still be a Manchester United player once the window slams shut on 5th October and Solskjaer will have to consider reintegrating him into his squad.

But the Manchester United manager wants to wait before taking a call on Smalling and is keen to wait until the transfer window closes.

Solskjaer said in a press conference when asked if Smalling will receive another chance at Old Trafford: “Different things need to happen, then.

“So let’s wait and see if there’s that change, let’s see what happens if and when the transfer window closes, and what happens to Chris.”

Smalling has been a Manchester United player for ten years and has made 323 appearances for the club.
