Roma were close to signing the 26-year-old striker and even had a contract agreed, but the deal failed to materialise due to outstanding issues between the player and Napoli.

Napoli are still keen to let him go as he is in the final year of his contract and Tottenham have emerged as the contenders to land him in the final stretch of the transfer window.

Spurs are in talks with Napoli over agreeing on a deal and the player’s representatives are in London, negotiating a contract with the north London club.

And according to Italian daily Tuttosport, the wages on offer at Tottenham are less than Roma offered to the striker earlier in the month.

It has been claimed that the north London club have offered a contract worth €4m per season, which is below the sum Roma proposed.

Tottenham are working under tight budgetary constraints and have added big wages to their salary bill after their capture of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.

Milik is also reportedly circumspect about joining Tottenham as he is afraid he could end up being the back-up to Harry Kane.

Tottenham are keen to sign him on loan with an option to buy set at €25m, which would have to see the striker signing a contract extension with Napoli.
