After months of negotiations, Roma have finally found a breakthrough in talks with Manchester United over a deal to take Smalling back to the Stadio Olimpico.

An intermediary managed to find common ground between the two clubs earlier this week and Roma are now closing in on a deal to sign the defender.

Over the next 24 hours, an agreement is expected to be finalised and it seems Manchester United’s negotiating tactics are set to pay off.

According to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, Roma will meet Manchester United’s €20m asking price for Smalling through various add-ons.

The Serie A giants were reluctant to meet Manchester United’s demands but the Red Devils stuck to their guns during negotiations.

Roma coach Paulo Fonseca has been pushing Roma to take Smalling back to Italy after he made a major impact last season on loan.

And the defender, who had also been linked with Inter, is set to return to the Giallorossi.
