Lyon believed that they had a deal agreed with Penarol to sign the talented young winger last week but Manchester United spoiled the French giants’ transfer plans.
The Premier League giants showed late interest in the player after tracking the winger for a few years and even holding talks with Diego Forlan about signing him earlier in the year.

Pellistri was prepared to move to Lyon but Manchester United’s insertion into the transfer saga changed everything and now he is on his way to Old Trafford.
According to Uruguayan radio station Sport890, Manchester United are close to signing Pellistri after triggering his release clause.
The Premier League giants have agreed to pay the €10m needed to snare the winger away from Penarol
The 18-year-old winger has agreed on a five-year contract with Manchester United and waiting to cross the Atlantic soon.
Manchester United are now finalising the documents to complete the transfer, including trying to sort out a work permit for Pellistri.
The Premier League giants are also working on a deal to sign Ousmane Dembele on loan from Barcelona and have an agreement in place to sign Atalanta winger Amad Traore.
