The north London outfit have made significant additions to their squad in the transfer window in the shape of Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Gareth Bale, Carlos Vincius and Sergio Reguilon.

However, Jose Mourinho is keen to add a centre-back to the list of incomings before the transfer window slams shut, with Skriniar a top target.

Spurs have been unable to reach an agreement with Italian Serie A club Inter over a deal for the 25-year-old centre-back so far, but are prepared to make a final attempt.

Mourinho’s side will make one last enquiry in an attempt so sign Skriniar from Antonio Conte’s side on deadline day.

The injury to defender Japhet Tanganga could also push the London-based club to push for the Slovakia international with hours left in the window.

However, taking the difference in the player’s valuation by the two clubs into account, Tottenham’s final effort could have come too late.

It remains to be seen if Spurs can manage to strike a deal with Inter, who have slapped €60m price tag on the defender’s head.
