Atsu has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park before the current transfer window slams shut with Championship side Watford touted to be keen on taking the Newcastle star on a loan deal.

The winger is not in Magpies boss Steve Bruce’s plans and has been told that he will not be featuring in the 25-man squad that the Englishman has to submit to the Premier League later this week.

The Hornets have already touched base with Newcastle over taking away the Ghana international on a temporary basis.

However, Watford could move for a permanent swoop for Atsu rather than a loan.

Atsu has entered the final year of his current contract at St James’ Park and will be free to leave as a free agent next summer.

The 28-year-old made his move permanent to Newcastle in July 2017 after spending the 2016/17 season on loan on Tyneside from Chelsea.

Watford’s Championship rivals Nottingham Forest are also credited with an interest in Atsu.
