The 30-year-old midfielder has remained on Chelsea’s books beyond the end of the window despite the club’s efforts to find a new home for him.

His last two loan stints at Burnley and Aston Villa ended in disappointment, and clubs were reticent to sign a player who has played little to no football over the last couple of years.

A move outside England was also mooted and his representatives tried to engineer a move to France in the recently concluded transfer window.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Drinkwater was offered to Ligue 1 club Angers and the player was keen on the move.

He had offers from Turkey as well, but Drinkwater was seriously considering playing in France this season.

Angers considered the chance to sign him but ultimately declined the offer as they were focused on signing French-speaking players.

It remains to be seen whether Drinkwater can find a club in the Championship before the domestic window closes on 16th October.
