The Hammers were in the market to reinforce their defence towards the end of the transfer window and made moves for several players in the market.

They managed to strengthen their defence with the addition of right-back Vladimir Coufal form Slavia Prague towards the end of the transfer window.

But he was not the only right-back the Hammers were keeping tabs on and they were also interested in Lille’s Celik during the summer.

And according to French sports daily L’Equipe, they even made a concrete afford to land the defender with informal bids being lodged with Lille.

But it has been claimed that none of the approaches crossed the €12m mark and Lille were not keen to sell him at such a low price.

The French club were also not prepared to lose Celik with little time left in the window as they were unsure about finding a proper replacement.

Serie A giants Roma were also keen but Lille ultimately kept hold of the player beyond the end of the window.
