Rashica was one of the players Werder Bremen planned to sell in the recently concluded transfer window, but they failed to move the winger on despite interest from several clubs.
RB Leipzig refused to meet Werder Bremen’s €20m asking price for the winger and there was a feeling that a move to the Premier League would bring the money the club wanted from his sale.
Aston Villa held talks with Werder Bremen over signing Rashica but ultimately they opted not to sign the Kosovo international.
Filbry admits that Werder Bremen need around €30m to balance their bottom line after the club’s finances were hit hard by the global crisis.
He conceded that selling Rashica would have eased the pressure on the club and got them back on a strong financial footing.
Filbry told German daily Bild: “Due to the situation, we have a shortfall in our income of around €30m over both seasons.
“In this respect, a transfer for Milot would have been important for us to get back in the right direction financially.”
Rashica has two years left on his contract with Werder Bremen and his future is likely to be under the scanner again in the rapidly approaching winter transfer window.
