Liverpool’s defence has come under the fire since their 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa last weekend and they have already shipped eleven goals in their opening four league games.
Their defending has been sloppy and is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp; and Nicol believes that the Reds need to stop playing such a high defensive line.
He conceded that he worried about Liverpool’s defence and the Merseyside derby against Everton after the break will be a test for the Reds.
Nicol admits that if the Reds do not change their defensive tactics and stop playing a high line, Rodriguez will inevitably find space behind the Liverpool back four in the derby.
Asked if he is worried ahead of the derby, Nicol said on ESPN FC: “Absolutely yes.
“Regardless of who the next opposition was going to be, I am questioning the backline.
“The fact that it is Everton and James, and the fact that if Liverpool decide to keep playing this ridiculous high line, if there was one man who can stick the ball behind with accuracy, it is James.
“So, yes absolutely, it is going on in my head.”
Everton are at the top of the Premier League table, after winning all their opening four league games.
