Since making his Premier League debut against West Ham United in January, Gordon has so far racked up ten more appearances in the top flight.

The 19-year-old has not featured for Everton in the league this season, but with winger Richarlison serving a suspension, Gordon along with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Bernard, is a candidate to fill the 23-year-old’s position.

And former Everton star Ball has backed Gordon to earn a spot in the Toffees first team for their next Premier League game as the teenager, in the 47-year-old’s opinion, is motivated and has the desire to prove his worth to Ancelotti.

Gordon has so far grabbed every opportunity that has come his way with both hands, according to Ball, and the ex-Toffees star believes the 19-year-old has what it takes to shine in the top flight.

“Anthony Gordon has done really well when given his opportunities so far”, Ball wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“Meanwhile Bernard has played out there a lot in the past but I feel he’s much more suited to a role in the middle, as he’s shown in the League Cup games this year.

“Alex Iwobi came on at the weekend and is absolutely another option, but it’s all up to the manager

“He sees these three lads in training and sees who has the hunger

“We know Gordon has that by knocking on Carlo Ancelotti’s door and asking when he’s going to be playing, and that’s great to see!

“It’s nothing cheeky, it’s desire.

“It’s up to him to put a performance in, and every time he has had that opportunity so far, he’s showed the manager that he is capable.”

Gordon started Everton’s first two EFL Cup games this season and chipped in with three assists, but was not in Ancelotti’s squad that faced Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
