Forster decided to fight for a place in the Southampton team last summer despite Celtic wanting to re-sign him on loan.

The goalkeeper had a solid last season at Celtic and the Scottish champions have missed his presence between the sticks, with Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain struggling for the Bhoys.

Forster has struggled to get game time at Southampton and Stewart conceded that he would not be surprised if Celtic try to re-sign him on loan during the January transfer window.

He stressed that at the moment Celtic do not have a top goalkeeper and feels their defence badly need a commanding shot-stopper who could give some confidence to an underperforming backline.

The former midfielder said on BBC Sportsound: “I’d not be surprised if Celtic are trying to talk to Southampton right now about trying to get Fraser Forster back on loan.

“He is obviously sitting on the bench and they have got a number of goalkeepers now at Southampton.

“I’d not be surprised if they are desperately trying to organise an emergency loan for the second half of the season.

“That’s a position where you need to build and start from and they don’t have a demanding goalkeeper at the moment.

“And then defensively in front of that they look at sixes and sevens but if you get a strong goalkeeper behind them, it’s a building block to start from.

“Celtic desperately need a top goalkeeper to breed some confidence in that team.”

Barkas conceded four more goals on Thursday night as Celtic lost 4-2 at AC Milan in the Europa League.
