Chelsea paid big money to snare Havertz away from Leverkusen in the transfer window, but the 21-year-old has struggled to adapt in England in his first few months at the club.

Havertz has scored just once in the Premier League thus far and is yet to put in a consistent run of performances that would justify his price tag at Chelsea.

McCoist insisted that the German is a brilliant player and his performances at Leverkusen reminded him of former Chelsea star Michael Ballack, especially the way he handled being the main man at the club.

However, he admitted that he has not brought that same level of performances to Chelsea, but given his quality and the investment the club have made, McCoist expects Havertz to get going in England soon.

The former Scotland star said on talkSPORT: “I still think he is a top player, he really is.

“I saw him a few times last season with Leverkusen and at Leverkusen, he was the big fish in a smaller pool.

“He loved it as everything went through him, he was the one who shouldered the responsibility and he reminded me of Ballack in the times I saw him at Leverkusen.

“Haven’t seen anything like that so far with Chelsea and it is an awful lot of money to be spending [on a player] but at the same time, I do think he will come good.

“Clearly when you are paying £80m you would hope to be getting an excellent player and he is that.

“But he has struggled to hit the ground running.”

Havertz was anonymous as Chelsea slumped to back-to-back defeats against Everton and Wolves.
