Ings has been one of the consistent strikers in the Premier League in recent seasons and has become a talisman in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton side.

But he will be entering the final year of his contract at Southampton in the summer and the two parties are some way away from agreeing on a new contract.

A general agreement is in place over his proposed salary, but Ings and Southampton are not seeing eye-to-eye when it comes to the release clause in his new contract.

Clubs are monitoring Ings’ situation on the south coast, with Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham ready to swoop to snap him up.

However, Spurs could face competition for Ings and it is claimed that Manchester United are one of the striker’s preferred destinations.

With his current deal running down rapidly, if he does not pen a new contract then Southampton are likely to be tested with bids in the summer.

The Saints want to keep him and they have reluctantly agreed to include a release clause, but the two sides are £20m apart when it comes to the value of the clause.

Ings wants a reasonable buy-out clause in his new contract in order to make sure that he could leave if he gets a chance to play Champions League football for one of the top clubs in England.
