The 28-year-old Australian goalkeeper has joined Arsenal on a loan deal until the end of the season from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ryan dropped down the pecking order of goalkeepers through the course of the ongoing campaign and the Seagulls were happy to loan him out this month.

Arsenal were in the market for a goalkeeper who can be Bernd Leno’s understudy after Alex Runarsson struggled and the Gunners snapped up Ryan on loan.

Arteta feels the 28-year-old will add much-needed quality to his Arsenal squad in the middle of the season and his experience of playing in the Premier League should come in handy in the second half of the campaign.

The Arsenal manager told the club’s official site: “We know Mat very well through his performances with Brighton in recent seasons and he brings additional quality to our squad.

“Mat has very good Premier League experience and has played over 100 times in the league, which is something that will benefit us greatly on and off the pitch.

“We welcome Mat to Arsenal and look forward to working with him this season.”

Ryan has made 121 Premier League appearances and will be hoping to add to that number at Arsenal.
