Chelsea opted to show Lampard the door on Monday, despite the club being just five points off the top four and him having to integrate a raft of new signings.
Lampard, who was unable to shift out a number of players in the last window due to the changed football landscape, had only been appointed in the summer of 2019 and then led the Blues into the top four despite operating under a transfer ban.
Gerrard admits he is gutted for Lampard, who he respects, but is sure he will soon return to the game.
The Rangers boss stressed the swift nature of the sacking, however in a nod to Chelsea’s history claims it is no surprise. Gerrard also insists that Chelsea had an opportunity to change their history and support Lampard.
“Gutted for Frank. He’s someone I respect greatly but, knowing the guy, he will dust himself down and be back in no time”, Gerrard told a press conference.
“I’m disappointed for him as I thought it was a very swift exit.
“I don’t know the details, how it’s been, the relationships inside the club.
“I did think it was an opportunity for Chelsea to reach out and support him during this tough period of results rather do what they’ve done.
“But Chelsea have got history for that, so it’s no surprise.”
Lampard is expected to be replaced by former Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by the French side in December.
