Speculation surrounding the 19-year-old’s immediate future at Chelsea has swelled in the final stretch of the transfer window with the arrival of a new man at the helm at Stamford Bridge in Thomas Tuchel.
Gilmour has failed to make the matchday squad in each of the German’s first two outings and claims have emerged linking the midfielder with a loan exit on deadline day.
Chelsea’s league rivals Southampton have emerged as a potential destination for the Blues starlet with Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl a firm admirer of him.
However, Gilmour moving to St Mary’s Stadium on a temporary basis is highly unlikely.
The Chelsea youngster has also been attracting interest from a host of clubs other than Southampton and is not expected to link up with Hasenhuttl for the remainder of the season.
There is a chance that Gilmour could remain at Stamford Bridge beyond the current window as Tuchel is still assessing the squad he inherited from his predecessor Frank Lampard.
The teenager, who has his heart set on earning a spot in the Scotland squad for next summer’s European Championship, is keen on featuring more regularly in the first team and it remains to be seen whether he will continue working towards his aim at Chelsea or at another club for the remainder for the season.
