The Anfield outfit made last-ditch efforts to solve their injury crisis at the back and brought in Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke on the final day of the transfer window.

Former Liverpool star Aldridge is hopeful that Davies and Kabak’s arrival will allow Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to return to their preferred midfield roles.

However, despite the reinforcements in defence, Aldridge conceded that it is hard for him to see Liverpool, who went five league games without a win after the 7-0 win at Crystal Palace, going through the rest of the season without more slip-ups.

The Reds’ are now four points behind table-toppers Manchester City having played a game more and Aldridge feels the Citizens will be ready to pounce if Jurgen Klopp’s side drop more points.

The loan signing of Ozan Kabak from Schalke and a deal to bring in a lad in from Preston were hardly big financial commitments and Klopp now has to try and work his magic with the tools he has at his disposal“, Aldridge wrote in his Sunday World column.

At least he has some defenders to work with now – and that could mean Liverpool will get their midfield back in full working order ahead of the City game.

Jordan Henderson has been a big loss in the engine room when he was required to fill in as defensive cover, and the same could be said of Fabinho, who is a class act in his natural midfield role.

It’s hard to see them getting through the rest of this season without a few more slip-ups and if that happens, City may be ready to capitalise again and cement their position as title favourites.

Having recovered from their poor run of form with consecutive wins over Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham, Liverpool will be hoping to build on it and close the gap with Manchester City.
