Bale returned to Tottenham on a loan deal last summer and there was palpable excitement about the winger pulling on the Spurs shirt again, seven years after he left the north London club.

But the Welshman has flattered to deceive this season and Mourinho has only played him six times in the Premier League with only two of them coming in the starting eleven.

There are suggestions the Spurs boss is not sure about playing Bale as he is unlikely to put in a defensive shift for the side, but Sherwood stressed that the winger should be played as a maverick in the Tottenham forward line.

He stressed that Bale is a special player and despite his age, he still has the ability to turn games on their head and he should be given the freedom to make an impact up front for the north London club.

Sherwood said on Premier League TV after Tottenham lost to Chelsea: “If he is playing as a luxury player, a free player and we are not giving him the ball and he is not hurting the team that way then he is out of order.

“You can get a kid from the academy to run back and double up on the right-back but he has got special talent.

“That is why he is being paid the big bucks and that is why he has been at Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world because he is special.

“He might not be as special as seven years ago but he has still got some gold dust in those boots but let him show it.

“Don’t waste his energy defending, you have got enough defenders to do it. Let him be a free spirit.

“That’s what I would do.”

Bale has scored just four times since returning to Tottenham in the summer.
