The 21-year-old has represented the Netherlands at youth international level, but is yet to make his senior debut for his country.
Struijk, who was born in Deurne, a district within the Belgian city of Antwerp, also qualifies to represent Martinez’s Red Devils and the coach has been in contact with the Leeds star in a bid to make him switch international allegiances to the country of his birth.
Martinez admits that Struijk is on his radar to potentially be called up to the Belgium squad, but insists the 21-year-old is amongst a group of over 100.
The Spaniard also added that he was surprised at seeing Struijk slot into midfield while playing for Leeds as he is a natural centre-back.
“I saw Struijk for the first time with Leeds against Derby [County]”, Martinez told Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.
“I was pleasantly surprised.
“Definitely because he played in midfield.
“He’s one of the 108 players that we are following closely.
“I have talked with him.”
Struijk has been fast-tracked into the Leeds first team by Marcelo Bielsa, with the Whites only securing him from Dutch giants Ajax in 2018.
