Bamford recently scored his 100th club career goal and has netted 12 times in the Premier League for Leeds this season.
The 27-year-old faced question marks ahead of the start of the season about his ability to make an impact in the top tier of English football.
But the striker has silenced his critics with his goalscoring exploits and there are now suggestions that he could be in line to break into the England squad.
Gray believes that after scoring 12 goals at this stage of the season Bamford should be in contention to be in the England squad.
He feels any other striker in the Premier League with his record would have been rated and he sees very little reason why he should not at least be in the conversation for an England call-up.
Gray said on LUTV: “If you are a striker at this stage of the season and you have scored a dozen goals, you have got to be in the run-in.
“He is up there with the top marksmen in the league, the team are playing, he is playing well and he is popping in the goals.
“Any other player at that level, when you are playing in the Premier League and you are doing very well, you’d expected him to be mentioned in the same breath as a lot of the other players who are doing well in the Premier League.
“There is no reason why Patrick should not be among the players who get mentioned for an England call-up.”
Bamford represented England in youth internationals and was courted by the Republic of Ireland to play senior football.
