A Borna Barisic penalty in the 90th minute earned Rangers a 4-3 win over Royal Antwerp at the Bosuilstadion in the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie.

Four away goals and the fact that they have lost just once this season in all competitions, make Rangers firm favourites to take care of Antwerp at Ibrox in the second leg and progress in the competition.

However, Vercauteren believes that his side lost not because Rangers were a far superior team but due to the fact that they made too many mistakes on the night.

He feels that it gives them hope for the second leg and has insisted that it will depend on whether Antwerp can be defensively solid as he is confident that his side will create chances at Ibrox as well.

“I am obviously disappointed by the result”, the Antwerp coach was quoted as saying by Belgian daily DH.

“We didn’t lose here today to a team that are much better than us. We made too many mistakes as a team and as individuals.

“Of course, this performance also gives me hope for the return leg.

“We will certainly have chances next week in Glasgow as well and then it will be a question of being more solid defensively.”

Rangers are favourites to progress but will want to make sure that they do not make any more mistakes at home.
