The Gers managed to progress all the way to the round of last 16 in the Europa league in the 2020/21 season, bowing out after holding their own against Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
Steven Gerrard’s men have maintained an unbeaten record in the continental competition this term and are currently one match away from sealing a place in the next round, holding a 4-3 lead from their first leg against Royal Antwerp in the round of last 32.
And ex-Gers star McCann has expressed his strong belief that the current Rangers side possess the quality to at least match or better their European record from last term, provided the whole team stay fit.
McCann added that Rangers have been able to take the momentum they have in the domestic league into Europe, which has turned them into a hard team to beat.
Asked whether he feels Rangers have the quality to match or better last season’s performance in Europe, McCann told Rangers TV: “I really do [think they can do well].
“Antwerp, they beat Spurs over there [in Belgium].
“But I actually looked at them and I am not being disrespectful to them, but I do not think they were a great side.
“I know they are going well within the Belgium top league as well.
“I just think Rangers, any time they played, were a class apart.
“I thought if they raised their levels certainly in the first half, they would have scored more goals.
“I think they will win the tie; I think they will go thorough.
“You’ve just got to keep a watch on picking injuries up, because then it hampers your ability to continue in competitions.
“But if I am honest, I do not think anybody in the group wants to play Rangers because they have been that effective.
“And that is not me just me blowing the trumpet because they are one of our Scottish sides flying the flag.
“They are a good watch and they are a hard team to play against, as we see if you can take your domestic stuff into Europe and be hard to beat, that is a good formula to have.”
Rangers will lock horns with Royal Antwerp on Thursday at Ibrox and will be keen on avoiding any surprises as they look to seal a spot in the round of last 16.
