Jota was in fine form for the Reds with five goals from his nine Premier League appearances prior to being sidelined with a knee injury in mid-December.

Liverpool are currently struggling in front of goal, resulting in them losing four league games on the trot, and Reds legend Aldridge feels the Portuguese’s impending return to the first team fold could give them a massive boost.

Aldridge feels Liverpool’s first choice front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are bereft of any confidence at the moment, while alternative options off the bench are not stepping up.

The ex-Red star believes that once Jota comes back into the squad and finds his scoring boots again, then he could be the one to drag Liverpool over the line to get positive results, provided he stays fit.

Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column:” I think we can just wait for Diogo Jota because he offers something different.

“I don’t want to make excuses but the players do look tired and they have done for a while.

“Especially the front three but we’ve just been making excuses for the last six weeks.

“We need another forward.

“Divock Origi comes on and all due respect he’s not changing things.

“I don’t know what went wrong with Takumi Minamino, he’s still a big question mark for me.

“But if Jota comes back and can keep fit, he will help big time.

“If he can start scoring again straight away then he could be the one to get a result over the line, but we’ve still got rookie centre-backs having to deal with the opposition we’ve got to play.”

Jota is expected to resume full training this week while Naby Keita and Fabinho are also due to return to action soon.
