Johnson’s arrival in December at the Stadium of Light has sparked new life to Sunderland’s bid for promotion with the team climbing up to fourth in League One.

The Black Cats, who have now won four of their last five league outings, are in a rich vein of form, and striker Wyke has tipped his hat to boss Johnson for the positive impact he has had on Wearside.

Wyke revealed that Johnson’s attack focused style of play suits him and his team-mates well, which has resulted in the Sunderland boss getting better performances out of his charges.

The 28-year-old added that Sunderland have become sharper up front, and are better equipped now to plug away at opponents that sit back and defend.

Asked how much of an impact Johnson has had at Sunderland since his arrival, Wyke told Sunderland’s official site: “It is good that he wants to play attacking football which suits all of our lads.

“We would play good football and sometimes when teams sit behind the ball it is not easy to break them down.

“But we keep plugging away and we keep getting in good areas to score goals and long may it continue.”

Wyke has 19 strikes to his name from 29 league outings and will be keen on adding to his tally when Sunderland host Rochdale at the weekend.
