Manchester United signed the Dutch midfielder from Ajax last summer but so far he is yet to make any sort of tangible impact and has made just two league appearances in the starting eleven.

The 23-year-old midfielder is currently out injured, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that he could be back ahead of Manchester United’s trip to AC Milan on Thursday night.

However, Wright is not sure Van de Beek would be able to make an impact as he stressed that Manchester United do not play the possession-based football that the Dutchman grew up with at Ajax.

He insisted that from the little of what he saw from Van de Beek before his injury he was struggling as Manchester United were not holding the ball enough for him to work his magic in the spaces in between.

Wright said on Premier League TV following the win over West Ham: “With Donny van de Beek, we are talking about somebody from the age of 8 or 9 who was at Ajax, he is built on a possession-based game.

“He is a very good player, but how can you play in this Man United side, in the way he has been brought up to play, as they are not a possession-based side, they are a counter-attacking side.

“How is he going to come in and make a lot of difference?

“I have watched him in a few games and he has tried to get into those spaces to try and make things happen.

“But it is not happening for him because they are not keeping the ball long enough for him to move and do his things.”

Van de Beek has played just 311 minutes of Premier League football since joining Manchester United last summer.
