After back-to back losses in the league and in Europe, Spurs returned to winning ways as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 on Sunday at Villa Park.

The three points have given Jose Mourinho’s outfit a boost in their chase for a top four spot finish as they climbed to sixth in the standings, just three points behind Chelsea, who currently occupy fourth place.

Ex-top flight star Neville insists Tottenham should be challenging for fourth place with the depth of talent they have at their disposal and they must build on the crucial win they registered against the Lions.

Neville added that if Spurs continue to get positive results with their quality players firing in goals to finish the season on a strong note, their rivals Chelsea will start feeling the heat.

Asked about how crucial Spurs’ win again at Aston Villa is to their season, Neville said on the Gary Neville Podcast: “Absolutely crucial.

“I think it determines the sort of last couple of months of the season, I think it was that big of a game [on Sunday].

“I think going into that sixth place, a point behind West Ham, three points behind Chelsea gives Jose Mourinho the feeling that he might still do something really, really good in the league this season

“I think if they had not won on [Sunday] night at Villa Park, they would obviously been too far away.

“I was just looking at the bench there again for Spurs, with Joe Hart, [Gareth] Bale, [Eric] Dier, [Moussa] Sissoko, Dele Alli, [Steven] Bergwijn, Ben Davies and I know Jose Mourinho mentioned two 16-year-olds before the game as sort of young players coming through, but the amount of experience and quality and depth, and that is without other players that are obviously not on that bench or in the team.

“So, they should be challenging for fourth place, they really should.

“And I think that Chelsea will feel a little bit of heat if Spurs get near them and I think they have got the type of players that could finish the season really well and they have got goalscorers.”

Spurs will return to top flight action on 4th April as they travel to Tyneside to take on relegation threatened Newcastle United following the international break.
