Hojbjerg, who joined Tottenham from Southampton last summer, has been one of the standout performances for Jose Mourinho’s side this season.
While the north London club signed the Dane last year, they had been keeping track of him since 2016 and it was former midfielder Tainio who initially scouted the player for them.
Tainio, who plied his trade for Spurs between 2005 and 2008, can see similarities between himself and the 25-year-old, but admitted that the former Bayern Munich man is more comfortable on the ball.
The Finn explained that Hojbjerg has improved massively since he first saw him in 2016 and feels the Tottenham star has gone on to become a complete midfielder.
“He is more comfortable with the ball than I was back in my days“, Tainio told The Athletic.
“I can see some similarities, the way he plays.
“I really like the player. He is a complete midfielder.
“He reads the game really well.
“And comparing him from 2016 and now, he has taken massive steps forward.
“He’s good on the ball, he knows his quality, he plays easy, and reads the game really well.
“He’s tough. I like the way he’s playing.”
Hojbjerg has not missed a single minute of Premier League football for Tottenham this season and has contributed to four goals in the process.
