The Ivorian, who arrived at Goodison Park in the summer of 2019 from German outfit Mainz, has had a nightmare start to his Everton career with injuries forcing him on to the sidelines for multiple spells.

Gbamin has only clocked up 135 minutes of football for the Toffees so far but took a step in the right direction on Friday as he returned to training.

Ex-Everton star Ball is delighted for Gbamin, but stressed he is a long-term option for the club next season and backed Ancelotti to ease him into the first-team to get the best out of him.

Ball believes the Toffees faithful will restrain from pitting unduly pressure on the midfielder as they are understanding of his situation and will give him time to settle in.

“The expectation from the fans won’t be too high because they’ll understand the situation, he’s been in over the last couple of years”, Ball wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“But it’s great to have him back and hopefully he can be the player that was brought to the football club, and he can bring a bit more quality into our midfield.

“Whether he appears between now and the end of the season, only time will tell.

“You have to trust in Carlo and the coaching staff on that side of things.

“For him personally I’m really happy for him and now it’s about getting fit without pushing himself too hard.

“He’s going to be eager; I know what it’s like being out for a long period of time, you’re like a kid in a sweet shop again! You want to do everything.

“He’ll have learned from the past and being at this sort of stage in his rehab previously before picking up another problem.

“Hopefully, with where the season is, there won’t be pressure for him to be involved for large stages this term.

“He’s a long-term option for next season.

“If he does feature, it shows that he’s doing well and he’s on the right path.”

It remains to be seen whether Gbamin will feature for Everton in any of their remaining games in the current campaign.
