Shaw has emerged as one of the most consistent performers for Manchester United this season and has earned his place back in the England squad.

He is considered by some to be the top left-back in the Premier League this term, but the defender had to come through a harrowing time under Jose Mourinho before reconnecting with his talent under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The England international was not helped by a double leg break he suffered in 2015 but he found it the hardest under Mourinho who regularly criticised the player in public.

Barnett stressed that the challenge for him was to rebuild the player’s confidence but insisted that Shaw himself is a strong character.

He told The Athletic: “My job in that situation is to make sure the player’s spirits are kept up.

“We try behind the scenes to help them understand what’s gone wrong.

“A lot of it is personal. We had to rebuild his confidence, which we did. We took certain steps.

“But Luke is a very strong man. He never got too down.

“His family had to be there for him and we had to be there for him.”

There was talk of Shaw leaving Old Trafford, but the agent insisted that he never advised the player to leave as he did not want to find the exit door at Manchester United.

“We didn’t say, ‘You’ve got to leave Man United, we’ve got to go because we need to make money’.

“We didn’t force Luke Shaw out of Man United. He wanted to stay there.

“And that’s what he’s done. And today, he’s a great, great player.”

With his current form, Shaw is also expected to be the starting left-back for England in this summer’s European Championship.
