The 19-year-old winger joined the League Two side on loan in January after spending the first half of the season at Scottish Championship side Morton.

McPake has started 16 of Harrogate Town’s 17 league games since he joined and has wasted little time in establishing himself in the starting eleven at the League Two side.

Thirlwell conceded that there is always the fear that a young player might find it hard to cope with the physicality of senior football but stressed that has not been a problem with the Rangers youngster.

He insisted that McPake’s work ethic has been one of his features and despite being young, he has more or less coped with the physicality of playing in League Two.

The Harrogate assistant admitted that he cannot expect the Rangers loanee to perform in every game but feels his talent will shine through.

“He’s shown an unbelievable work ethic here. He’s full tilt”, Thirlwell told The Athletic.

“There is always that element in your mind as to whether young players will be able to step into the men’s game but he’s coped really well.

“Physicality hasn’t been an issue.

“He’s got a really low centre of gravity and we play 4-4-2, so it’s a very intense shift.

“There haven’t been many games where he’s been found wanting.

“We have to understand that he can’t produce every single game but as long as the work ethic and the willingness to put himself in the positions is there.

“That will be what gets you out of the team quicker than not delivering will.

“His ability will always shine through.”

McPake has scored twice in 16 appearances for Harrogate Town in League Two.
