Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champion League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid in Spain on Tuesday night.

While the away goal gives Liverpool a flicker of hope, the result means Real Madrid will be the favourites to make it to the semi-finals going into the second leg at Anfield next Wednesday night.

However, Nicol admitted that he does not see much Klopp can do in the next week to change things around Liverpool before the second leg.

He pointed out that the midfield looked out of sorts in Spain and feels that he cannot do anything to fix their leaky defence as well.

The former Red said on ESPN FC: “I think for Klopp and the Liverpool fans, the worrying thing is, what he can do to change this?

“I don’t think he can do anything.

“Fabinho looks heavy-legged, I have never seen [Georginio] Wijnaldum looking so tired from the get-go, you are bringing on Thiago who is not going to be able to go and close the ball the way the best Liverpool sides under Klopp have done, so you can’t change that.

“Real Madrid are still going to get the ball at Anfield and now you add the problems they have got at the back.

“What are they going to do to change the backline? They can’t change the backline so how does Klopp change this?

“There are a lot of questions but certainly there are not a lot of answers.”

Liverpool are still in the race to finish in the top four and will take on Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
