The Reds registered a 3-0 win away at rivals Arsenal at the weekend in the Premier League; their second win on the trot after a poor run of results that saw them lose six games in seven outings.

The Reds are now set to host Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday where they are yet to win a single top flight game since the turn of the year.

However, Lions boss Smith has insisted Liverpool are not any less formidable despite their struggles at home as they are a top team with a top coach under whom they need very little to get going as they showed against the Gunners in their last outing.

Aston Villa handed Liverpool their first league loss of the current campaign back in October in a shock 7-2 win at Villa Park, which Smith sees as one of his best results and admitted he is surprised by the Reds’ slump in form this season.

“It is the best result in terms of the quality of the team and what Liverpool have done”, Smith told a press conference.

“Virgil van Dijk was still in the team as well.

“It was an outstanding performance.

“[Liverpool have] one of the top coaches in the world and they are a top team.

“It doesn’t take a lot for them to get going as we saw at Arsenal.

“I’m extremely surprised by their form this season.

“Hopefully it [an upturn in results] will be the game after they play Aston Villa.”

After back-to-back wins on the road, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be determined to turn their fortunes around at Anfield with a win against Aston Villa come Saturday.
