Lingard has been the centrepiece of West Ham’s push for Champions League qualification since he joined the club on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window.

He has scored eight times in nine league appearances for the Hammers and is expected to be included in the England squad for this summer’s European Championship.

With only a year left on his Manchester United contract, the Red Devils are expected to sell him at the end of the season but there is also talk of the club offering him a new contract.

But Nevin insisted that Lingard must not return to Old Trafford as he will go back to his old levels and Manchester United do not suit him anymore.

He stressed that West Ham are the right club for him and he is in the right place for his career going forward.

Nevin said on Off The Ball: “I don’t think he should go back to Manchester United.

“It is not right for him, it doesn’t fit him, doesn’t suit him and I think he will go back to where he was before if he goes back to Manchester United.

“Don’t stay there mate, move.

“Try and get to a team where you are one of the main, if not the main, lynchpin of the team and that would be West Ham.

“He has gone and arrived at a place where it suits him.”

Manchester United are claimed to be exploring the possibility of using Lingard as a makeweight in a deal to sign Declan Rice from West Ham in the summer.
