The 19-year-old has mostly been deployed as a right-back or a right wing-back since he joined the Lilywhites on loan from Liverpool in the winter transfer window.

More than two months into his spell at Deepdale, Van den Berg was handed his first start in his preferred centre-back position against Stoke on Saturday.

Having helped Preston to a 0-0 draw against the Potters, the Liverpool loan star has expressed his delight at helping his team to keep a clean sheet.

Van den Berg also revealed that he was pleased to return to central defence against Stoke and admitted that he felt more comfortable there, though he can fit in at right-back.

I’m happy with the clean sheet“, Van den Berg was quoted as saying by the Lancashire Post.

Everyone knows that centre-back is my preferred position.

I’ll fit in anywhere, but against Stoke I was able to play in my position that I prefer to play in so I was happy.

If I’m honest I felt more comfortable there, it’s where I’m used to playing and in my opinion where I play best.

Van den Berg has made 12 Championship appearances for Preston since joining on loan in February.
