Rangers have agreed on a pre-contract to sign Sakala on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.

The Zambian has scored 13 Belgian top flight goals this season for KV Oostende and has the ability to play as the second striker and on the right-hand side of a frontline.

Craigan feels Rangers were looking to bring in someone who could play on the right flank as they have tried many players in that position this season without anyone settling in that role.

He believes it works for Rangers that Sakala is not a number 9 as he could be deployed on that right-hand side and will have the freedom to drift along the frontline for Steven Gerrard’s side.

The former Motherwell star stressed that Rangers have done a smart piece of business by signing the Zambian.

Craigan said on the Go Radio Football Show: “It just seems that I think it was one position Rangers have lacked someone that can play on the right side of that front three.

“Joe Aribo has played there, Scott Arfield has played there, Kemar Roofe has played sometimes and Ryan Kent has played on that side.

“I don’t think they had someone who can be a dribbler and be Ryan Kentesque on that side of that pitch.

“The fact that he doesn’t want to play as a number 9 and he is not an out and out winger that’s what Rangers want.

“Rangers want someone to play as an old fashioned inside forward who can play in that number 7, break beyond the striker, can get goals and drift across the front line.

“So, that was one position they were looking to try and bring in and Ross Wilson said that they wanted pace and power. They tried out in January and as well as the summer.

“They did it with Scott Wright and now they have done it with Fashion Sakala and it certainly looks like that it is going to be a productive move.”

Sakala will hope to cement a place in Gerrard’s team through his performances once he joins Rangers in the summer.
