Cavani’s future at Old Trafford is under the scanner at the moment amid talk he could exit the club in the summer, having registered 12 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

It has been a topic of discussion among the Red Devils faithful who will the club need to bring in as a long-term replacement to lead the line when the Uruguayan departs and former Manchester United star Sheringham has also weighed in with his pick.

Spurs hitman Kane and Dortmund starlet Haaland are names credited with interest from the Mancunians and Sheringham feels the Red Devils should choose the Englishman over the Norwegian.

Kane is the best number 9 in the world, according to Sheringham, and he stressed Manchester United should try to lure the 27-year-old away from Tottenham over launching a swoop for the less experienced Haaland.

Asked who should Manchester United turn to as a long-term replacement for Cavani, Sheringham told Bookmakers.co.uk: “You’re talking about Harry Kane.

“He is the top number nine in the world for me.

“People talk about [Erling] Haaland who is a very good youngster coming through with unbelievable promise, but Harry Kane is the best number nine in the world.

“From a Manchester United point of view, if you can get him, then go get him.

“Tottenham supporters won’t want to hear that, but they’ve heard it for the last three years – Harry Kane is a big money player, he’s the best and everybody wants him.”

34-year-old Cavani is claimed to be open to staying at Old Trafford beyond the current campaign despite interest from elsewhere and it remains to be seen if Manchester United will push for a new hitman if he does remain.
