Kent was subjects of bids from Leeds United last year but Gerrard made it clear that he was not going away from Rangers.

The 24-year-old has had a brilliant season at Rangers, playing a starring role in the club winning the Scottish Premiership title after a decade.

His future is again under the scanner with suggestions that a number of Premier League clubs are interested in the winger.

Ferguson feels Kent is one player Rangers must make sure that they do not lose despite the player being wanted in the Premier League.

He pointed out that the winger has shown in the last few months a brilliant level of consistency and Kent is the kind of match-winner Gerrard should be desperate to hold on to.

Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show: “If there is one player Rangers really need to keep [it is] Ryan Kent. They have got to.

“I know there will be clubs down south, they have got so much money, but I am sure the manager, if he is going to lose one player, he has got to make sure it’s not Ryan Kent.

“I think he has shown over the last couple of months a real level of consistency in his game.

“He is a game-changer, he is a match-winner and he has been exceptional.

“Need to try and keep a hold of him.”

Leeds could come back in for Kent in the summer as he remains highly rated by Whites head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
