The absence of Harry Maguire was telling on Thursday night as Manchester United produced some chaotic defending to lose 4-2 to Liverpool at home.

There were suggestions that with Eric Bailly signing a new deal, signing a defender was no longer a priority, but it seems a centre-back remains on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s agenda.

And Real Madrid and France centre-back Varane has emerged as their top target for the summer.

The Premier League giants a prepared to table an offer of around £40m to snare the Frenchman away from Real Madrid.

Varane has only a year left on his Real Madrid contract and he has not shown any inclination to sign a new deal.

The Spanish giants are also prepared to let him go as part of their plans to raise some funds from the market.

With only a year left on his deal, Manchester United are confident that an offer of £40m could do the trick.

Manchester United also wanted Varane at the start of the last decade, but Zinedine Zidane’s influence took him to Real Madrid.
