Griffiths has been a peripheral figure at Celtic this season and there are question marks over his future at the club ahead of the summer.

The striker played a few minutes in the last game of the season at Hibernian on Saturday, but the jury is out on whether he will star for his country at Euro 2020.

Hartson admits that the lack of enough minutes under his belt and concerns over his fitness will play a part when Scotland manager Steve Clarke picks the 26-man squad.

But he stressed Griffiths is the kind of natural goalscorer who is worth taking a gamble on despite his indifferent season at Celtic.

Asked if Griffiths will be in the Scotland squad, Hartson said on the Go Radio Football Show: “Has he played enough football?

“I would take him because I just think he is a natural, but how fit is he because he has not played enough awful lot.

“All these things will come into it when Steve Clarke is thinking of the final 26.

“I would take a gamble on him because we saw what he did against England a couple of years ago when he hit two free-kicks.

“He is a special type of talent.”

Griffiths was not in the Scotland squad for the international games in March.
