The Saints made an impressive start to their Premier League campaign and were at the top of the table at one point, but saw their levels drop as the season went by.

However, Ward-Prowse has remained consistent for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists from 36 appearances so far.

Having contributed to 15 goals, the Englishman is Southampton’s best player this season ahead of the likes of Danny Ings, according to former top flight star Crooks.

The 63-year-old went on to insist that Ward-Prowse is a Liverpool player in the way he operates, and suggested that Southampton could be line to field offers for the midfielder in the summer.

Ward-Prowse, in my opinion, has been Southampton’s player of the season“, Crooks wrote in his BBC Sport column.

They will do well to keep him.

He’s a Liverpool player if ever I saw one.

Ward-Prowse will be hoping that his performances for Southampton will earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championship.
