The Saints travelled to Elland Road in February and were defeated 3-0 by the home side, a defeat that was part of a disastrous run of form that saw Southampton pick up just one point in nine Premier League games.

Tonight the Saints welcome the Whites to St. Mary’s looking to avenge their loss in the earlier game, while Leeds will have the objective of cementing their place in the top half of the league table, which they can accomplish with a win.

Hassenhuttl insisted that the Saints on Tuesday will be a much-improved version from the one that were defeated by the Whites  and stated that his side struggled with the slippery pitch and had injury problems in the fixture in January.

The Saints boss feels that his side will have to be near their best to challenge Leeds, who he called perhaps the best squad in the top flight physically.

“Against this team it will definitely be tough, because if you want to create a chance you have to run a lot and cover a lot of distance and sprint a lot and to get behind them is not so easy, but finally there are also chances and it will be important for us to have a very good game plan”, Hassenhuttl was quoted as saying by Southampton’s official site.

“It’s a very energetic style [they play with].

“I think the last result, 3-0, was maybe a little bit too high.

“I think the difference was not that big, especially in the first half we had also opportunities to score and finally didn’t and then the momentum was on their side I think.

“We have developed our game.

“It was a very tough game there, because the pitch was very slippery and we had some issues with injuries and so on.

“It’s a tough side, physically the best in the league maybe, and we are also an energetic team and we have to fight for the points.”

Both Southampton and Leeds have won their last two league games and both will go into the match on Tuesday in good form.
